TRIAGE Coaching System

TRIAGE is a gospel-centered coaching framework based on Reformed theology. It is not a model for autonomous human growth, but a transformative journey led by God’s Word and grace. The word “triage” originates from the French verb trier (meaning “to sort” or “to classify”). Originally, in 18th-century France, it referred to the commercial process of selecting and grading the quality of goods such as coffee, wool, or wine. In modern times, it is mainly used in medical and emergency contexts, indicating the process of determining patients’ treatment priorities in order to use limited resources (medical staff, equipment, time, etc.) most effectively. The concept has since expanded into fields like management, leadership, and coaching, where it refers to the systemic decision-making process of discerning and setting priorities amidst complex situations. Just as medical triage classifies patients based on survivability and urgency, spiritual ministry should prioritize “restoration of life and calling” over mere “activity volume.”

As saving one life in medical triage can affect many others, so in coaching, identifying a Leverage Point—the core issue—is essential. For example, when an organization faces “declining performance,” addressing “restoration of leadership trust” before simply redefining goals can trigger greater change throughout the system. The same principle applies to individuals. Triage coaching takes a root cause approach, rather than just treating surface-level problems.

Key Reflective Questions:

  • Is the topic at hand directly connected to core values or identity?

  • If this issue is resolved, will other problems naturally be addressed as well?

  • Does this issue align with the long-term direction?

The 7 Stages of Triage Coaching

1. Biblical Authority (Truth)

  • The starting point of all coaching is not human wisdom, but the absolute authority of God’s Word.

  • The Bible exposes human problems and presents the gospel as a living alternative and truth.

2. Facing Fallen Reality (Reality)

  • Coaching is not about exploring human potential, but about recognizing the true state of fallen humanity and calling for repentance.

  • Facing reality is not for discouragement, but marks the beginning of grace.

3. Identity in Christ (Identity)

  • Human identity is not shaped by achievement, but is newly formed through union with Christ.

  • True self-understanding comes from the gospel.

4. Obedience in Practice (Action)

  • Actions are not the result of personal willpower, but the fruit of grace through the Holy Spirit.

  • All practice is expressed in gratitude and reverence.

5. Journey of Growth (Growth)

  • Growth is not the achievement of goals, but the process of sanctification.

  • The Holy Spirit works within us, leading transformation through discipline in the Word and community.

6. Worshipful Evaluation (Evaluation/Exaltation)

  • The end goal of change is not self-fulfillment but worshipful gratitude that glorifies God.

  • All learning and obedience culminate in “Soli Deo Gloria.”

7. Integration and Commissioning for a Gospel Life (Integration & Commissioning)

  • TRIAGE is not just about learning but the structural transformation of life.

  • Truth brings us to face reality, identity generates action, and sanctification leads to worship. Ultimately, each end is the beginning of a new commissioning. “The Gospel begins again every morning.”
